Living in the Charleston area means that you have a variety of opportunities at your fingertips on any given day. One popular summer excursion for locals and visitors of the Charleston area is taking a day trip out to Sullivan’s Island. The beautiful beach is enough to hold most anyone’s attention, but the charm of Sullivan’s goes far beyond its scenery. The business district on Middle Street runs just two blocks off of the beach and offers a variety of great restaurant options for those looking for more than a picnic by the ocean.
Arguably, the most popular casual lunch and dinner spot is Poe’s Tavern. Poe’s is famous for its mouth-watering hamburgers, its relaxing porch seating, and its Edgar Allen Poe décor. Not many people know, but Poe was a resident of Sullivan’s Island for the 2 years he was stationed at Fort Moultrie while in the army. Other restaurants worth paying a visit to include High Thyme, the Obstinate Daughter, Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ, Dunleavy’s Pub and Taco Mamacita, to name a few.
For the history buffs paying a visit to Sullivan’s, touring the famous Fort Moultrie is a must. One of the oldest standing forts on the Eastern Seaboard, Fort Moultrie is rich with Revolutionary and Civil War history. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, the idea was to build a fort on one of Charleston’s barrier islands to protect the port city from invasion. Before the fort was fully constructed, it was attacked by the British in June of 1776. As the story goes, the fort made of Palmetto logs was sturdy enough to withstand the battle and resulted in some heavily damaged British ships retreating the Charleston area.
The quaint little shops of Sullivan’s are always worth a look while exploring the island. Whether you’re looking for fine art or small memorable gifts, you’ll be able to find what you need. Looking for architectural genius? Stop by our friends Herlong & Associates and look through their impressive portfolio. There is truly something for every type of shopper on the island. We have to admit, we have grown quite fond of Sullivan’s Island over the years; so fond, in fact that Handsome Properties will be opening an office of its own! Stop by and visit us at 2216 Middle Street after August 3, 2016. We would love to meet you!
