Each spring, Spoleto Festival USA 2026 transforms Charleston into a vibrant hub for the performing arts. Running May 22 through June 7, 2026, the 17-day festival brings together world-renowned artists and emerging talent across opera, theater, dance, and music.

Set against Charleston’s historic theaters, churches, and outdoor spaces, Spoleto offers an immersive cultural experience that draws visitors from around the world while engaging the local community. With more than 100 performances scheduled, it remains one of the country’s leading arts festivals.

History of Spoleto

Spoleto Festival USA was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti. His vision was to create an American counterpart to the Festival of Two Worlds, which he established in Italy in 1958.

Menotti chose Charleston for its unique blend of historic charm and cultural infrastructure. The city’s intimate scale allowed the festival to take over the entire downtown, while its established venues provided the perfect setting for world-class performances. With the support of then-Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. and College of Charleston president Theodore Stern, the inaugural festival launched in 1977 and quickly became a cornerstone of Charleston’s cultural identity.

This Year’s Events

The 2026 season features a wide range of performances across disciplines, including opera, chamber music, jazz, theater, and contemporary works.

Signature experiences returning this year include the Opening Ceremony, the chamber music series, and large-scale performances staged in iconic venues such as the Dock Street Theatre and the College of Charleston’s Cistern Yard.
