Best Charleston Beach Communities to Live & Play

Handsome Properties November 26, 2014

One of our favorite things about Charleston is its close proximity to various beaches. One minute, you could be living the urban lifestyle, strolling down trendy King Street or enjoying lunch at a world renowned restaurant, and a mere 20 minutes later you could be catching rays and enjoying the island lifestyle on one of the city’s three close-by beach communities. Each beach offers something a little different from the next. Whatever kind of relaxation in the sun you’re in the mood for, you can be sure you’ll find it in Charleston.

Folly Beach

Among the three beaches, Folly has the biggest and best waves for surfing. Take a trip to the washout during a storm if you want to see some talent on the water. Folly is also known for its restaurant and bar scene.

Walking down the main strip, you’ll find lots of local favorites such as, Lost Dog Café, Surf Bar and Rita’s. Locally known as “the edge of America,” Folly’s fun and laid-back atmosphere is one you don’t want to miss.

Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan’s Island is considered the most family-friendly of the three communities. Its mild waves and vast beach make it the perfect spot to post up for a day of relaxation. And if you get hungry for lunch but don’t feel like heading home yet, no problem.

Sullivan’s town center has some stellar options. Try Poe’s Tavern for a great burger, Hometeam for barbeque or the island’s newest gem, Obstinate Daughter, for fresh seafood. Take an evening beach stroll down to the end of the island for some incredible views of the Cooper River Bridge and Fort Moultrie.

Isle of Palms

The Isle of Palms is a fantastic place for out-of-towners to visit. Unlike Sullivan’s, this island has hotels and an abundance of rental properties available by the week. Interested in a game of golf? Wild Dunes, the resort on the far end of the island, has two of the most beautiful courses in the Charleston area.

The front beach area also has some restaurants and evening venues that are worth checking out. Head over to Coconut Joe’s for unbeatable ocean views (and a cocktail or two) before ending the night listening to the always-enticing live music playing at the Windjammer.

Living in Charleston is truly an experience that can’t be matched. With so many fabulous beach-going options at your fingertips, it’s impossible to go wrong!
