Following our is part two of our hidden gems and personal favorites that you won’t find in your guidebooks. From the freshest sushi in to one of the best bakeries in town, we urge you to take a moment and check out some of these places. You won’t regret it!
A personal favorite located at 835 Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant (a 10 minute drive from downtown over the Ravenel Bridge), Oriental Garden may trouble newcomers due to the lack of aesthetics on the façade of the restaurant.
We beg you not to let this distract you- all of the good stuff is inside. The sashimi here is to die for; you must try the Thai Sashimi. The soups, the wontons, the everything is wonderful; and they even have a pick up window for convenient access for a nice take-home meal. This is a local staple for easy and delicious Japanese. Three words: grilled cheese sandwiches. This charming old pharmacy, standing at 121 Pitt Street since 1938, offers a full service pharmacy, a variety of products (think miniature CVS) and has an old timey counter where you can get the best grilled cheeses in town.
Over the years, kids from the neighborhood (Old Village) have tried to beat the record of the most grilled cheeses eaten in one sitting. Last we checked it stood at around 24, but who’s counting. Sit and enjoy the beautiful “mom and pop” pharmacy feel and have a root beer float, a sundae or read a book in the old booths while going back in time about 75 years.
Whether you check out their location at 19 Broad Street or 32 Windermere Boulevard, stop in at Normandy Farms Artisan Bakery for a feel of a real French countryside bakery experience. They offer fresh breakfast biscuits, croissants, a great array of coffees, fresh baked breads daily and all sorts of other goodies. Closed Sundays and open until 5, stop in for a delightful fresh-made sandwich. Our suggestion? Roasted turkey on focaccia…get it toasted for extra deliciousness.
Bowen’s Island Restaurant has been standing since the year 1946 at, you guessed it 1870 Bowen’s Island Road. It’s been referred to as one of the South’s best “seafood dives.” While all their seafood is scrumptious and fresh, we suggest skipping the expensive downtown seafood restaurants and heading out to Bowen’s Island for a low-key, island-time relaxed atmosphere and for the best oysters, well, ever.
Okay, so while this hidden gem at 106 Church Street may not be a restaurant, you will not go home empty handed or empty bellied- believe us. Goat Sheep Cow’s wide array of cheeses, cured meats, crackers, and wines will leave you wanting more. Walk in to a welcoming atmosphere and take your time browsing the soft, semi soft, and hard cheeses. You won’t regret trying the Truffletta cheese. Then move over to the cured meats for some mortadella and some Copa.
Grab some crackers to accompany your cheese before you move onto the large variety of wines. You may only recognize a few, and that’s the point. They want to offer people a different variety than what you can find at your average store. The prices are beyond reasonable. Also, let yourself be tempted by the dark chocolates at the checkout counter. Hmmm, heaven.
