Charleston Stage has one of the oldest and largest arts education programs for young people in the Charleston area, and has been in residence at the Dock Street Theatre since 1978. This month we sat down with the Julian Wiles, Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Charleston Stage and the Dock Street Theatre, to learn about their offerings.
In 1736 the original Dock Street Theatre, the first theatre in America, was built on the corner of Church and Queen Street. In those days Queen Street was known as Dock Street. The original theatre burned in the Great Fire of 1740 and a hotel called the Planter’s Hotel was built on this site in 1809. The current facade (added in 1835) and the lobby and drawing room were part of the hotel.
In 1935, the current theatre, modeled on 18th century theatres, was built within the walls of the hotel by the WPA, a Federal works project, and then turned over to the City of Charleston which currently manages the venue.
Live performances have been taking place in this historic theatre ever since it reopened in 1935. Charleston Stage began performing here in 1978 and currently produces over 160 professional performances annually.
A number of ghosts are rumored to haunt the theatre including Junius Brutus Boothe, an actor and father of John Wilkes Boothe, who stayed in the building when it was still a hotel.
“Elf The Musical”, based on the hilarious 2003 Will Ferrell film, opens December 1st and runs through December 19th. The musical features an all professional cast and live orchestra. You can find tickets here.
Charleston Stage has an extensive education program including after school and summer classes for young people. These are held at Charleston Stage West Ashley Theatre Center. More information on classes and education program is available at CharlestonStage.com/Education.
In addition to the education programs noted above, Charleston Stage has a free high school apprentice program for over 50 students each season. We also offer enriching classes in area schools and in non-pandemic seasons bring over 25,000 students to see live performances at the Dock Street.
Alums from Charleston Stage’s education programs have appeared on Broadway in “Wicked”, “Aladdin”, “West Side Story” and more, as well as, on such TV series such as “The Good Wife”, “Criminal Minds” and “Lost”.
