Five Ways to Celebrate Charleston This Winter

Handsome Properties December 7, 2021

With an average high temperature of 62 degrees in December, Charleston escapes the kind of cold that requires residents to bundle up in heavy winter coats when they go outside. Winter weather in the Lowcountry often sees daily high temperatures in the mid-seventies. It’s the perfect season to enjoy some of the things we love best about living in Charleston.

Our warm climate is one of the reasons why people choose homes in Charleston. Our world-class shopping, pristine beaches, outdoor recreation, and culinary style make Charleston a place to celebrate year-round.

Here are five ways to celebrate Charleston this Winter. Looking for homes in Charleston? Handsome Properties is the premier luxury boutique real estate firm in Charleston, offering many historic properties on the peninsula and its surrounding areas for sale. Contact us to start your Charleston home search today.

1. Take a Beach Walk

Beautiful beaches surround Charleston. After September, fewer visitors allow residents to enjoy the spectacular views and serene atmosphere. Celebrate Charleston this winter with a walk on the beach. The beaches on Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms are ideal for long walks.

The Isle of Palms has six miles of wide, pristine beach easily accessed via more than 50 beach paths. One of Sullivan’s Islands chief features is its 2.5 miles of Atlantic Ocean beachfront. Many homes on both Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms are within walking distance of the beach.

2. Go Golfing

Charleston is a world-class golf destination with championship courses located throughout the region. Several top-rated golf courses are open to the public. These include the Links Course and the Harbor Course at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms and Charleston National Golf Club in Mount Pleasant. Both Wild Dunes golf courses were designed by Tom Fazio. The course at Charleston National was designed by Rees Jones.

3. Feast On Oysters This Winter

Fresh oysters are one of Charleston’s culinary delights. Restaurants where locals dine on oysters include Royal Tern on Johns Island, The Darling on King Street in downtown Charleston, Gillie’s Soul Food on James Island, and 167 Raw in the French Quarter.

One of the most anticipated annual events in Charleston is the Lowcountry Oyster Festival. This year it will take place on February 22 at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. General admission is $22 with tickets available online, at Boone Hall Farms, or any official Charleston Visitor Center. VIP tickets are $175 and available online. VIP tickets include admission and a VIP area with unlimited oysters, food, and beverages.

4. Celebrate With A Stroll On King Street

2nd Sunday on King Street is a tradition that returned to downtown Charleston after an 18-month hiatus due to COVID-19 protocols. Managed by the Charleston Peninsula Preservation Trust (CPPT), this event has taken place since 2010. CPPT President Susan Lucas noted, “We’re very excited to re-start 2nd Sunday.

It’s been sorely missed by the downtown retail and dining establishments and the thousands of local and regional visitors who come to stroll, shop, dine and enjoy Charleston’s ‘Main Street’ on a vehicle-free, pedestrian-only afternoon.”

The final 2nd Sunday on King Street will take place on December 12. King Street between Calhoun and Queen streets will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 12 to 5 PM. Be sure to celebrate Charleston this winter and stop on by.

5. Explore Historic Homes

Charleston is home to some of the best-preserved examples of American architecture. The Historic Charleston Foundation offers house tours at two downtown historic homes. Tours are offered seven days a week from 10 AM to 5 PM. The Aiken-Rhett House dates from 1820 and is known as one of the best-preserved townhouse complexes in the country.

The Nathaniel Russell House is a National Historic Landmark restored to its 1808 appearance. Its defining architectural feature is a three-story cantilevered staircase. Drayton Hall is one of the best-known historic sites in the Southeast to learn about early American history.

Never restored, the house is an outstanding example of Palladian architecture and the only plantation house to survive both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. The main house and grounds are open Wednesday through Monday.
