Five Ways to Fall in Love with a Charleston Rental Home This Winter

Handsome Properties December 4, 2020

Charleston winters are mild with December temperatures as high as 70 degrees and plenty of sunshine. Renting a home in Charleston is an ideal way to enjoy the charm and culture of our beautiful city—and the winter months present a perfect time to escape the cold up north.

Whether you start your long-term winter stay in time to enjoy Charleston’s many holiday events and traditions or begin the new year in Charleston, we look forward to helping you find your Charleston winter residence.

Here are five ways to fall in love with a Charleston long-term rental home this winter.

1. Rent a Property With Us

First things first. You need a place to stay. A long-term rental home with Handsome Properties—like the one featured here—gives you a base from which to launch day trips and beach walks. You can also cozy up and stay in, lingering over al fresco dinners on the deck and watching the latest movies and TV shows.

Our bespoke rental services can help you find the best options for a long-term rental home or condo. We start by reviewing your needs and wants, from number of bedrooms to preferred location. From the list of appropriate homes that best fit your needs, we can schedule viewings and attend with you or on your behalf.

Once you choose a long-term rental, we’ll oversee lease negotiations and smooth the move-in process from recommending movers to hooking you up with service providers for utilities and home maintenance.

2. Enjoy the Mild Weather

Leave the heavy coats and winter boots behind. Winter attire in Charleston is often polo shirts and tees with a sweater. Nighttime temps can drop to the mid 40s, so you’ll want light jackets and fleeces.

Charlestonians love spending time outdoors during the winter. It’s prime time for fresh air, beach walks, biking, and bird watching. Downtown Charleston is completely walkable and even in the winter, you’ll see flowering plants and greenery. The mild weather makes outdoor dining and sunset viewing a pleasure.

One of our favorite ways to enjoy a Charleston winter day is with a cup of artisanal coffee or a hot chocolate. Kudu Coffee and Craft Beer in downtown Charleston is a lovely place to enjoy both while sitting outside in their courtyard cafe.

3. Golf at a Premier Course

Charleston is home to some of the most beautiful golf courses in the Southeast. Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms boasts two 18-hole golf courses designed by award-winning golf course architect Tom Fazio. The Wild Dunes Links Course overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and the Wild Dunes Harbor Course extends along the Intracoastal Waterway.

Patriots Point Links in Mount Pleasant overlooks Charleston Harbor. This 18-hole course sits at the foot of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and is a five-minute drive from downtown Charleston. The 17th hole is set on a small island in Charleston Harbor and offers offers spectacular views of Fort Sumter and Shem Creek.

4. Tour the Holiday Festival of Lights on James Island

James Island is located south of downtown Charleston. Fort Sumter is located just off its tip. A primarily residential community, James Island is known at holiday time for its annual Holiday Festival of Lights.

This year’s edition allows visitors to see millions of holiday lights from the comfort of their own vehicles. Open nightly through December 31, the Holiday Festival of Lights is one of Charleston’s favorite holiday traditions. Hours are 5:30 to 10 PM. Purchase tickets here.

5. Celebrate the Holidays With a Charleston Tradition

The Holiday Festival of Lights on James Islands is just one of the many traditions in Charleston at Christmastime. There’s theater, a holiday market, and a laser light show at Theodora Park. This year, Charlestonians are looking forward to a brand-new tradition—the inaugural Festival of Trees.

This free event is a display of 20 themed holiday trees, each decorated in honor or in memory of someone who has battled cancer. The event also features a beautiful menorah display in honor of Hanukkah. Trees will be on display through January 5. You can see them at the Charleston Visitor Center and bid to win your favorite.
