Handsome Properties Holiday Charity Organization: My Sister’s House

Handsome Properties August 11, 2015

Each year around the holiday season, Handsome Properties chooses a local charity for which we collect donations. This year, we have chosen to support My Sister’s House – a local non-profit organization providing services, programs and resources to empower domestic violence victims and their children.

The organization provides an emergency, temporary shelter for women and children who are fleeing abusive situations in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties.

The Handsome Properties team along with the local community will work hard to provide the organization with a variety of needs, from pajamas to pillows and batteries, along with any monetary donations, before the holiday season is over. Please consider working with us to help ensure these women and children have what they need during the colder winter months.

We are collecting monetary donations as well as any of the other accepted items listed below at our office location: 53 Broad Street, Charleston SC 29401 through December 21, 2015

Services and Resources Provided by My Sister’s House:

The non-profit offers quite a bit of support to those in need of help, first and foremost with its temporary shelter. Other services include a 24-hour crisis line; food, clothing, and transportation; help purchasing medicine; counseling and therapeutic assessments; music, art and pet therapy; among many others. The non-profit also aids in a court advocacy program for its victims to ensure they are well represented.

Volunteer Opportunities with My Sister’s House:

There are many ways a person can volunteer with the program. Because of the sensitive nature of the organization, all volunteers must apply and complete a proper training process. Click here to submit an application.

  2. Victim’s Advocate: Volunteers may also accompany clients to family court hearings and assist with legal paperwork.
  3. Children’s Aide: Volunteers may choose to assist in coordinating activities for children of mother’s who are involved in the program.
  4. Shelter Aide: Volunteers are able to assist in making any minor maintenance repairs, sorting donations and taking inventory.
  5. Speaker’s Bureau Volunteer: Represent the agency at various functions by educating the public about the issues faced by victims of domestic violence.
  6. Spanish-speaking Volunteers: An urgent need at My Sister’s House, Spanish-speaking volunteers are able to help counselors provide information, advocacy services and counseling to victims.
  7. Group Volunteers: There are a variety of projects needed that would not involve direct interaction with My Sister’s House’s residents. Instead of filling out an application, those interested should email [email protected] to hear more about these opportunities.
  8. Internships: The organization offers a handful of internships for both undergrads and graduate students. These internships are structured to provide the student with opportunities to work closely with advocates, counselors and therapists and in return, a minimum of 100 hours per semester is required. Those interested should email [email protected].
