South Carolina Maintains Its #2 Spot for “Inbound Moves” in 2015

Handsome Properties March 11, 2016

According to the United Van Lines 39th Annual National Movers Study in 2015, South Carolina is the second most popular state in the country for inbound migration. The first is Oregon. Many current residents of the Lowcountry of South Carolina have seen the influx of movers over the past several years, and it’s interesting to see the statistics supporting our observations. There are a few reasons given as to why this might be the case, one of which being the age of the baby boomer generation.

As the boomers get older, they are finding the desire to move to milder climates. So, this could partially explain why there are so many residents leaving the colder, Northeastern states and moving south. Another explanation is the development of technology making its way to the Pacific Northwest as well as parts of the South. The millennial generation is drawn to places like Seattle, Portland, and Charleston for the strengthening creative marketing scenes and technology start-up atmospheres.

Finally, this trend can also be attributed to the “want” that many people have for outdoor activities and wide open spaces, as opposed to what they may be accustomed to in bigger cities. The Northeast continues to experience a moving deficit with the top outbound state being New Jersey, closely followed by New York for the fourth consecutive year. Connecticut and Massachusetts also saw a decline in inbound migration in 2015 and a major increase in outbound moves.

The one Northeastern state that is the exception to the trend is Vermont, which saw 62% of moves in 2015 as inbound. This speaks to the idea that more people appear to be moving toward wide open areas with plenty of things to do outdoors. Here are the two lists generated by Van Lines showing which states have more people moving in and which have more moving out:

Moving in

The Top Inbound States of 2015 Were:

  1. Oregon
  2. South Carolina
  3. Vermont
  4. Idaho
  5. North Carolina
  6. Florida
  7. Nevada
  8. District of Columbia
  9. Texas
  10. Washington

Moving Out

The Top Outbound States for 2015 Were:

  1. New Jersey
  2. New York
  3. Illinois
  4. Connecticut
  5. Ohio
  6. Kansas
  7. Massachusetts
  8. West Virginia
  9. Mississippi
  10. Maryland

It is evident that the popularity of moving south is continuing to grow. If South Carolina’s beauty doesn’t make visitors want to move here, you can be sure its charm, hospitality, and booming economy will catch the attention of many prospective movers.
