Sullivan’s Island Voted One of the Top 10 Seaside Towns in the US

Handsome Properties January 15, 2016

Sullivan’s Island was recently named one of the Top 10 Happiest Seaside Towns of 2016 by Coastal Living magazine. While Sullivan’s Island is pretty tiny at only 3.3 square miles, we’ve came up with four reasons why Sullivan’s Island deserves that spot.

1. History.

Sullivan’s Island may be small, but it’s big on history. The island has been occupied since the 17th century, and was a critical logistics location, and military point during the Revolutionary and Civil War eras. Fort Moultrie still stands on the island. The HL Hunley, the first combat submarine to sink a warship, was stationed off of Sullivan’s Island, and Edgar Allen Poe was once a resident.

2. Location.

Sullivan’s Island could not be anymore centrally located. The island touches both the Atlantic Ocean and Charleston Harbor, and next door is lively Isle of Palms. The island is also only 2 miles from Mount Pleasant and the Old Village, 4 miles from I-526, and 8 miles from historic downtown Charleston. Sullivan’s Island couldn’t be in a better spot. The island is also located on the Intracostal Waterway and many creeks and inlets, making water activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding easily accessible.

3. Culture And Lifestyle.

Ranked the 2nd best thing to do in Charleston by US News Travel, it’s hard to be in a bad mood while on Sullivan’s Island. You have the astounding, clean beach with 3.5 miles of shoreline, great local shops, and a variety of local restaurants, including The Obstinate Daughter, Poe’s Tavern, Home Team BBQ, Taco Mamacita, and High Thyme.

While there are cars on Sullivan’s Island, expect to see a lot of people getting around by foot, bikes, carts, and boards. Life on Sullivan’s Island is very laid back and slow-paced. You don’t have to be one of the locals to enjoy what Sullivan’s has to offer, and with no weekly rentals, no buildings over 38 feet, and no houses over 5,600 square feet, the island leaders have made sure it stays quaint and quiet.

4. Real Estate.

While there are only 1,800 permanent residents, there is plenty of rental and vacation properties.
