A Charleston tradition spanning 77 years, formerly named the Festival of Houses and Gardens, has evolved into The Charleston Festival. This month-long celebration, running from March 14 to April 14, 2024, promises to offer attendees a deep dive into the city’s rich history, architecture, and cultural fabric.
As a cornerstone of the Historic Charleston Foundation‘s mission-driven work, the festival serves both educational and celebratory purposes, contributing to the preservation of this picturesque southern city.

One of the standout features of this year’s festival is the dynamic kick-off weekend known as Charleston by Design. This exclusive event showcases Designer Vignettes at the historic Aiken-Rhett House, blending art, interiors, and preservation seamlessly.
The Design in Mind Lecture Series and Designer House Tours add an educational element. They promise to make this opening weekend a captivating experience for those interested in the artistic side of Charleston.
Adding a touch of artistic flair to the festival is the featured exhibition by Charleston-based Painter and Draftsman Jill Hooper. Titled “Windows into Another World,” the exhibition will be hosted at the Aiken-Rhett House Museum for the entire duration of the festival. At the event, attendees can delve into Hooper’s world through painting workshops, drafting sessions, studio tours—an interactive art experience.

The festival’s cornerstone, the House & Garden Tours, will continue to provide exclusive access to some of the most beautiful private houses and gardens in Charleston. However, this year’s edition promises more than just a glimpse into architectural marvels.
