For the first time, Travel + Leisure Magazine’s “World’s Best City” rankings named a U.S. city number one. Charleston, SC has received many accolades in the past, but none compare to the honor that comes with the title of the “Best in the World.” We certainly don’t disagree! The Charleston lifestyle has captivated us for years and is exactly why we choose to call the Lowcountry home. Here are just a few of the reasons why we think this award is well-deserved.
The peninsula, full of history and interesting architecture, has enough aesthetic beauty to keep anyone amused. Around just about every corner is a breathtaking scene just asking for a photo opportunity. From the historic charm of South of Broad to the up and coming beauty that the upper peninsula is turning into, it’s hard to go wrong in Downtown Charleston.
One of the main attractions of the City of Charleston is definitely its stellar food scene. Visitors certainly don’t leave hungry and residents love a good excuse to check out a new hot spot. From upper King Street to East Bay and everywhere in between, there are so many incredible options it’s hard to keep up as more and more open up.
The Darling Oyster Bar does a fabulous seafood tower featuring the freshest seafood around. And we are not limited to just restaurants. Amazing options are also available at the weekly famers markets Downtown and at Folly Beach where one can only get the freshest ingredients.
Charleston’s history is one of the main reasons why so many fall in love with the city. As many are aware, the first shots of the Civil War were shot just across the harbor at Fort Sumter. There are daily tours that take visitors and residents alike on a journey back in time. Cruising along the harbor toward the fort, the tour guides do an excellent job of giving an in depth history of the way things used to be in Charleston. Many say that they learn something new on each trip! Fort Sumter isn’t the only place a history buff might like to visit.
Fort Moultrie, located on Sullivan’s Island, is a big land mark for both the Civil War and American Revolution. In addition to the many American battle locations, there are endless amounts of gorgeous historic homes and churches, some of which have been know to house some of our nations founding fathers. George Washington even used to worship at Saint Michaels Church on Broad Street!
Charleston’s art scene never sleeps. From traditional canvas oil paintings to contemporary visual art, this city has taken broad strokes to be sure that the arts never go under appreciated. And we aren’t only talking about the hundreds of art galleries and museums.
There are countless venues for music and theatre too! Comedy clubs, improv shows, pop-up concerts, you name it- it’s happening. The Gaillard Center was recently renovated and has hosted musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma and even the New York Ballet.
Nothing beats having options; especially when it comes to choosing a beach. Not only are there miles of coast line minutes away from downtown, but there are three fabulous beaches to go to within 10 miles! Folly Beach, Sullivan’s Island, and Isle of Palms each have their own drawing card, but all are fabulous for a day in the sand and salt water.
