Handsome Properties October 13, 2016
In the midst of last week’s chaos preparing for Hurricane Matthew, a wave of comfort came from The Dewberry Hotel in providing safe accommodations. Some of us at Handsome Properties were fortunate enough to stay at this incredible boutique hotel. The Dewberry opened its doors only 5 months ago here in Charleston. As the headline location for this hotel, the Dewberry and its incredible staff plan on expanding into other regions of the United States.
With hospitality and style, The Dewberry was a 5 star choice for a place to weather Hurricane Matthew’s wrath. Thankfully Charleston was not affected to the magnitude of our neighboring state North Carolina, but there was still significant damage, hazards, and precautionary measures to consider. In short, those of us who hunkered down in this fortress of a building, had a blast! The accommodations provided by the Dewberry staff were impeccable. Cuisine from Henrietta’s was just the right combination of classic southern and contemporary cooking.
And libations at The Living Room were stirred to perfection. With just 155 rooms, each is designed and decorated with tasteful contemporary class. From Marion Square, the Ravenel Bridge, and numerous church steeples, no matter where you stay, a scenic view is guaranteed from every room. And if you’re wondering how the beds were, we’ll just say that beds imported from Ireland are worth the voyage they made across the pond.
John Dewberry’s vision for “Southern Reimagined” was brought to life after 8 years of thought and collaboration with architects and designers. He has an eye for simple elegance which works perfectly for this restored 60’s Federal building. In the back, you will find his recreation of a walled Charleston garden that will soon be covered in crawling ivy. If you were able to see the building before Mr. Dewberry and his team went to work, you would have seen a very unattractive brick structure, something many considered as one of Charleston’s worst eye sores.
A miraculous transformation took place when a grey limewash was applied to the exterior which accentuates the classic marble work and original architecture. We encourage you to take a tour of this magnificent hotel or have a bite to eat at Henrietta’s, or plan a weekend getaway like we did! This hotel, restaurant, and bar combination is the perfect addition to the growing nature of Charleston.
