What’s the Best Kitchen Layout for Your Charleston Luxury Rental Home?

Handsome Properties April 17, 2020

Kitchens are personal. Other than the bedroom, the kitchen is where we spend most of our time when we’re at home. Kitchens are the heart of the home, the room where we cook, eat, and do homework. It’s where parents watch their toddlers bang on pots and pans.

It’s where we drop the mail, read the mail, and sort the mail. And now that more of us are staying at home to slow the spread of a global coronavirus pandemic, the kitchen is where many Americans have set up a home office.

Of course, the kitchen is a room designed primarily for cooking and meal prep. That’s another reason why kitchens are personal. What kind of cook and meal prepper are you? Do you prefer to rule the kitchen as sole chef? Or do family members team up to get meals on the table?

Depending on your habits and preferences, there’s a kitchen layout that’s best for you. Those last two words are important. Kitchen layouts come in six basic types (galley, one-wall, U-shape, L-shape, peninsula, and island), but the best one? The best kitchen layout is the one that works for you.

As you look for long-term luxury rental homes in Charleston, here’s an overview of four of our exclusive offerings, each with a different kitchen layout. Let’s take a look at each one.

Before we get started, we should touch on two kitchen design approaches. The first rests on the concept of the work triangle. According to this approach, the primary tasks in a home kitchen involve the sink, the stove or cooktop, and the refrigerator.

Those three appliances and the imaginary lines between them form what kitchen designers call the work triangle. When these three features are efficiently arranged, the kitchen becomes an efficient work space.

The second design approach focuses on kitchen work zones. This approach divides the kitchen space into zones for different kinds of kitchen tasks. According to the this approach, kitchen work zones typically include zones for cleaning, baking, meal prep, and serving.

Both concepts are used for efficient kitchen layouts. But again, the best kitchen layout is the one that works best for you.

1. One Wall Layout With an Island

Located at 5 Gadsdenboro Street, #505 just off East Bay in downtown Charleston, this 2-bedroom, 2-bath contemporary condo features a one-wall kitchen layout with an island that faces a open-concept living and dining area.

This layout combines both kitchen design approaches. The work triangle is formed by the oven and refrigerator along the wall and the sink installed in the island. Seating on one side of the island incorporates the kitchen zone concept by providing an eating and serving zone.

2. U-shape Layout With an Island

Located at 128 Bull Street, #B in charming Harleston Village, this 4-bedroom, 3.5-bath Colonial-style home boasts period detailing, hardwood floors, and a modern chef’s kitchen arranged in a U-shape. An island provides extra storage, counter space, and seating.

In this kitchen, the sink is located between a cooktop on one side and double ovens and a fridge on the other side. This layout packs a lot of kitchen in an cook-centric space. The island adds a zone that could be used for meal prep, morning coffee, or baking.

3. L-shape Layout With an Island

This exclusive luxury rental has a L-shaped kitchen layout with an island. This 5-bedroom, 5.5 bath home on 1718 Ion Avenue in Sullivan’s Island has a large kitchen that beautifully applies the concept of kitchen zones.

You can see in this photo that the cooking zone has a double oven with a prep sink next to it. The fridge is placed along the back wall close to the cooking zone. That back wall is meal prep central with cabinets and shelves for a microwave, toaster, and other small appliances. You can’t see it in this photo, but on the other side of the Persian rug is a cleaning zone with a sink and dishwasher.

4. Peninsula Layout

A peninsula kitchen layout features a connected island like the one in this 4-bedroom, 3-bath home on 655 Serotina Court in Mount Pleasant. In this kitchen, the peninsula provides seating on one side. With an adjacent sink, the peninsula can also serve as cleaning zone.

Counter space on either side of the stove provides a cooking zone. This kitchen also honors the work triangle with the sink, fridge, and stove forming an efficient layout.
