Why Celebrities Call Charleston Home

Handsome Properties January 17, 2020

The city of Charleston is famous for many things: its stately homes for sale, beautiful architecture, history, and outstanding restaurants, just to name a few. It’s no wonder that its residents include celebrities from the arts and entertainment world.

Celebrities in Charleston

Celebrities with ties to Charleston include Bill Murray, singer and songwriter Darius Rucker, talk show host Stephen Colbert, and street artist Shepard Fairey.

Bill Murray, Actor

Many Isle of Palms luxury homes have private access to the island’s beautiful beach.

Actor Bill Murray is one of the more active members of the Charleston community. His most frequent sightings are at the Joe Riley Stadium watching RiverDogs games, as he is co-owner and director of “fun” for the minor league baseball team. He’s also a part-owner of the popular Wagener Terrace restaurant, Rutledge Cab Company, and in 2015 he opened a new restaurant called Harold’s Cabin. Most recently, he was spotted outside of Fast and French, staging a photo napping with a baby.

Another frequent stop of Bill’s is Queen Street Grocery, where you can order the delicious “Murray” crêpe with turkey, melted brie, green apple shavings, spinach, and a combo of Sriracha and pesto.

Danny McBride

Danny McBride moved from Los Angeles to Charleston after local Bill Murray had convinced him to shoot Vice Principals here. Danny and his crew instantly fell for the Lowcountry. Danny McBride has since opened a production facility in Charleston where he films the HBO series, The Righteous Gemstones.

Filming has taken place from Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Park in North Charleston to Fenwick Hall Plantation House on Johns Island. You can watch the second season of Righteous Gemstones now on Netflix.

Darius Rucker, Singer

Native Charlestonian Darius Rucker was the lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish. Rucker founded the band in 1986 while attending the University of South Carolina. As a solo artist, he’s performed many concerts at the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center. Every summer he performs at the Volvo Car Stadium as Hootie and the Blowfish, a performance you most certainly don’t want to miss.

OBX Cast

The Netflix series, Outer Banks, is a local favorite. Although the series is set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the show’s seasons were filmed right here in the Lowcountry. Many Charleston natives can recognize the shooting locations while watching the show, and some are even lucky enough to spot the filming in person. The cast and crew have traveled up and down the peninsula capturing the picturesque scenes you see on the show.

Some notable filming locations include Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, Lowndes Grove, Washington Square Park, and The Charleston Gaillard Center. They are currently filming for their next season, so be sure to look out for the cast.

Stephen Colbert, Talk Show Host

Stephen Colbert spent the majority of his young life in the Charleston area. He attended Charleston’s Porter-Gaud School where he participated in several school plays and contributed to the school’s newspaper. He doesn’t permanently live in the area but has been spotted while visiting friends in town.

Shepard Fairey, Artist

Most famous for the iconic “HOPE” portrait of Barack Obama, Shepard Fairey was born and raised in Charleston. His street art and graphic design have been exhibited in contemporary museums all over the country.

His series of large-scale street murals can be seen all around Charleston such as the “Power and Glory” mural on Tivoli by Butcher & Bee and High Wire Distilling Company, an 18-foot by 24-foot mural of his famous OBEY Giant logo on top of the Francis Marion Hotel, a square mural on the King Street Groucho’s Deli, and a neon “Power & Glory” sign and various artwork under the Sottile Theatre marquee.
