Here in the lowcountry life is better spent outdoors. From walking around the historic streets of Downtown Charleston to basking in the sun on Sullivan’s Island, not much beats this awesome place to live and play.
Fishing is one of the premier adventure activities this area has to offer. With its wide range of saltwater fish, you never know what you might hook. Inshore and offshore fishing is accessible to all. We’ve put together a short guide on where to fish and what you can expect to catch in this lovely place we call home.
In order to legally fish in saltwater you must have a fishing license. Though law enforcement may not check the license, you could face a hefty fine if you get caught with out one. Residents can purchase an annual license for just $10 and Nonresidents for $35.
There are nearly 500 license agents throughout the state of SC so you will not have any trouble finding one if you are from out of town. You can also purchase one online.
You’ll never run out of places to cast a line, but here are fun locations just to get you started if you’re having a hard time deciding.
Go all the way down to Station 16. Here you will find a long path surrounded by woods that leads you to the beach. This is pretty far down the island so it’s generally pretty quiet and not crowded by swimmers. What makes this special is that you’ll have a great view of Fort Sumter right ahead! You may also see container ships pass by and boy they are huge!
Fish from the seawall on the Battery at White Point Gardens. Here you can cast a line while surrounded by the most spectacular historic homes! The parking is free and you won’t have to walk far. There is nearly 1.5 miles of waterfront access so you won’t have trouble finding a spot to set up.
Located between Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island, you can fish from either side of the inlet or off the bridge. The water is deep and perfect for hooking a mullet, whiting, blue fish, shark, or even a nice flounder.
The biggest precaution to take here is recognizing the currents and their vast force. People drown here quite often despite the signage that says to stay out of the water. Porpoises can be seen feeding and jumping during the tides, making this spot a photographers dream!
