It’s that magical time of year in Charleston again! Spoleto has officially arrived, offering a magnificent array of some of the world’s most talented artists.
Spoleto Festival USA was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti and American conductor Christopher Keene who had the idea of creating an American counterpart to their annual Festival of Two Worlds which takes place annually in Spoleto, Italy. Charleston provided a perfect fit: it was intimate enough that the Festival would captivate the entire city, yet cosmopolitan enough to provide an enthusiastic audience and robust infrastructure.
Two years later, the sister festival Piccolo became an official part of Spoleto. Whereas Spoleto Festival USA features artists and performers of national and international renown, Piccolo Spoleto highlights outstanding local and regional artists with several hundred performances throughout the city.
For 17 days each year, Spoleto Festival and Piccolo Festival take over Charleston’s theaters, churches, and outdoor venues with performances in opera, dance, theatre, and music.
Tickets tend to sell out quickly to the various performances offered by the festival each year. Delight in Beethoven’s epic, uplifting final symphony as the Spoleto Festival USA’s Orchestra and Chorus join the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus for this offering of effervescent joy.
The country’s most gifted choristers unite in the glorious, transformational power of song in Spoleto Festival USA Chorus’s inaugural solo debut featuring voices of Romanticism: Britten, Brahms, and Bruckner.
Perplexingly memorable, narrative-wrapped songs from Texas theater-kid-turned-Americana rocker Shakey Graves headline this celebration of the Festival’s 46th season. And yes, the fireworks are back, baby.
Breathtaking stunts and live music illuminate this showcase of dizzying feats that are at once playful, poetic, and perilous.
Three conversations draw us into the inner lives of Anna, Cora, and Denise. What will they reveal to each other? And what does each of them have to hide?
