Porch Season in Charleston

Charleston summers—however hot and humid they may be—are best spent outdoors. Although there are endless outdoor activities to try in Charleston, some of the best days and summer nights are spent simply enjoying the ambiance of a patio or porch view.

Romantic gardens represent a historically European style adopted to inspire emotions and familiarity through intentional placement and color contrasts of plants. This tactic is what was used to produce Charleston’s heavenly Magnolia Plantation Gardens in 1850.

The Romantic style gardens utilize flowers with shades of pink, lavender, yellow, and white. The placement of these flowers is meant to highlight the focal point of the garden such as the patio or outdoor seating.

Perfect Options for Creating a Romantic Themed Garden That Will Combat the Harsh Climate:

  1. Mealy Cup Sages are luminous violet flowers that bloom in the summer and can sustain through low-maintenance gardening; however, they must be placed in moist, well-drained soil to mature properly. Mealy Cup Sages benefit from a medium layer of mulch to keep the roots moist throughout June and July. They also need plenty of water and regular fertilization
  2. The Thread Lead Coreopsis grows and thrives through the summers as well and can add a vibrant pop of color into your garden with its warm yellow tones. Thread Lead Coreopsis requires well-drained, moist soil, and would benefit from a layer of mulch and regular fertilization.
  3. Pentas can be pink, purple, red, or white and are perfect for starting a garden in the summer. Pentas should also be planted in moist, well-drained soil and would benefit from a layer of mulch and regular fertilization
  4. Marigolds are gorgeous yellow and orange flowers that thrive in the sunshine. Marigolds need full sun exposure and lean soil as they can become vulnerable in moist shaded areas.
