Established in 1998, the neighborhood of I’On sits within the bustling town of Mount Pleasant in a delightful setting that puts residents needs and amenities first.
When you drive through I’On, you’ll notice how the streets trace a curved path with sharp bends and trees placed close to the curb. This encourages drivers to follow the 20-mile-per-hour speed limit that makes it safe for residents to ride bikes, cross the street, or head to one of I’On’s many parks, lakes, or trails. It’s just one of many principles that went into creating one of the earliest “new urbanist” communities in the United States.
I’On’s tree-lined streets add to the history, ambience, and beauty of this planned community. Developed on a 243-acre site bordering Hobcaw Creek in the heart of Mount Pleasant, I’On has a history of colonial settlement that dates back to early 1700s.
I’On is named after Jacob Bond I’On, a descendent of the Bond family who originally built Hobcaw Plantation in the 1730s. Residents can still visit the I’On family cemetery that was formally rededicated in 1996.
Today I’On is a neighborhood of homes that exemplify Southern residential architecture at its best. I’On homes are graced with porches, columns, and verandahs. You’ll find homes with grand staircase entrances. In true Charleston style, many homes feature double verandahs.
I’On has its own neighborhood center, a personal downtown district with shops, restaurants, and services arranged within a charming area within walking distance from many of the surrounding homes.
Deeper within I’On are parks, lakes, canals, and walking trails for residents to enjoy. Many of the largest and most stately homes are situated around the lakes.
A neighborhood like no other in Mount Pleasant, I’On is distinguished by a number of unique features. As one of the earliest urbanist communities in the country, I’On is comprised of walkable blocks of about 800 homes in close proximity grouped around public spaces for all residents to enjoy.
Those public spaces include 2 lakes, 12 parks, an outdoor amphitheater, a boathouse, 6 miles of walking trails, about 2 miles of marshfront hiking trails, and a deep-water-access boat ramp.
At the entrance to I’On is the I’On town square where residents can dine, shop, and linger over an iced coffee. You’ll find a pub, a bakery, and cafes for take-out dining to enjoy back at home or under the sun on a town square bench.
I’On boasts two clubs within its neighborhood boundaries. The Creek Club borders Hobcaw Creek and is a popular site for weddings and other events on a rental basis. The main building provides more than 5,000 square feet of event space that includes wide porches with picture-perfect views of the creek and marsh.
Live oaks draped with Spanish moss create a beautiful backdrop for outdoor events. The I’On Club is a private, members-only club with tennis courts, swimming pools, a fitness center.
I’On is a true standout among the many residential neighborhoods in Mount Pleasant. We invite you to review our Mount Pleasant community overview to learn more about why Mount Pleasant is a sought-after community for families, young professionals, and retirees.
