Bustling, buzzy, and booming with new restaurants and businesses, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, is a Charleston suburb where city leaders point with pride to the prestigious All-America City Award earned in 2020, ten years after receiving their first in 2010.
Young professionals, families, and retirees look for homes for sale in Mount Pleasant thanks to a strong economy, good schools, and high quality of community amenities. They follow in the footsteps of those who lived in Mount Pleasant since the Sewee Indians and the first colonial settlers who arrived from England in 1680.
Today Mount Pleasant is the fourth largest municipality in all of South Carolina. Many developments and districts make up this community of over 93,000 people. The oldest and perhaps the most beloved is the Old Village tucked behind Coleman Boulevard and Ben Sawyer Boulevard in the corner of the town that overlooks Charleston Harbor.
Yes, the Old Village is historic. Here’s where you’ll find the Hibben House at 111 Hibben Street, built in 1755. In 1899, the crew of the H.L. Hunley walked across a wooden footbridge to test their submarine.
Residents now use the site to fish, catch crabs, and enjoy views of Charleston Harbor. The shops along Pitt Street are anchored by the Pitt Street Pharmacy, in business for more than 60 years.
But you’ll also find trendsetting shops and restaurants in the Old Village—like the Studio Shoppe with its luxe approach to fashion, furniture design, painting, and photography. You can stop in for your daily espresso at Rudi’s Old Village Wine Shop where more than 140 wine labels and cured meats and cheeses are on offer.
Boutique fitness center Old Village Gym features 24-hour access with their gym memberships. The homes for sale in the Old Village are handy to all the restaurants, shops, and services along Coleman Boulevard and Ben Sawyer Boulevard.
Schools in the Old Village include Moultrie Middle School, Montessori of Mount Pleasant, the Mount Pleasant Academy, and Coastal Christian Preparatory.
This wedding venue estate overlooking the water lies at the end of Middle Street. Once a ferry terminal, this historic building offers magnificent views of Charleston Harbor from the back porch. Wander the marsh paths or head over to the playground to swing.
Walk your dog, go on a bike ride, or casually stroll along this scenic Old Village walkway, which has gorgeous views of the Ravenel Bridge, Fort Moultrie, and the Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse and bridge.
There’s a row of Palmetto trees and benches leading up to the historic bridge, where fishermen gather to cast their lines and throw in their crab traps. The bridge was originally built in 1898 as a trolley bridge allowing passage to Sullivan’s Island.
From April through September, this open-air farmers market is set up at a designated venue along Coleman Boulevard from 3:30 to 7 PM every Tuesday. Sift through just-picked veggies, fruits and flowers along with local seafood, baked goods and local snacks among vendors. The market is walking distance from many part of the Old Village or just a short drive away!
