Welcome to Charleston Neighborhoods: Ansonborough (Part 3 of 4)

Handsome Properties June 13, 2014

Ansonborough is a charming neighborhood boasting some of the oldest and most elegant homes on the Charleston peninsula. Its location is ideal, bordered by East Bay, Pinckney, Meeting and George Streets, and is home to many of Charleston’s most famous restaurants and shops.

While much of the area was developed in the early 1700s into what was Charleston’s first suburb, almost all of the original homes were destroyed in the fire of 1838. New homes were built out of Charleston brick in the mid-1800s, many of which are still around today.

Ansonborough, Charleston History

One of the more interesting facts regarding the history of Ansonborough, Charleston, SC real estate is how Captain George Anson was able to acquire the land in the early-mid 1700s. It is rumored that the then 26-year-old ship captain paid for the 64-acre stretch of land with his winnings from a card game played with current landowner, Thomas Gadsden. Anson then returned to his duties on board the vessel known as the “Squirrel” where his primary responsibility was to protect the South Carolina and Georgia borders from pirates and looters.

Upon his return to Charleston, Capt. Anson laid out the plot of land into streets and lots. He named two of the streets after himself, “George” and “Anson”, and three more of the streets after the ships which he felt were the most influential on his career, “Scarborough,” “Squirrel” and “Centurion.”

Scarborough and Centurion were later absorbed into Anson and Society streets, respectively, while Squirrel became an extension of Meeting Street. The community eventually fell into slum conditions over the next century. Around 1960, the Historic Charleston Foundation began a rehabilitation program, which restored over 100 homes in the area. The program became an inspiration to many buyers in the area leading to a massive restoration movement.
