Colonial elegance meets waterfront charm with vibrant dining nearby.
Located in Downtown Charleston, Ansonborough is a small, historic district that dates back to 1696, when it was conceived as a Charleston subdivision. The neighborhood stretches from King Street to the edge of the Cooper River, between Hasell and Calhoun Streets. Ansonborough is a highly sought-after area boasting historic architecture harkening back to the Colonial days.
Many properties making up Ansonborough real estate were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. The district houses Charleston's oldest private home, the Col. William Rhett House, which dates back to 1712.
The neighborhood was conceived in 1696 as the first suburb for the old Charles Town, a walled city back then. The story goes that George Anson, a prominent colonial naval officer, won rights to the property in a card game with a rich local businessman. Ansonborough gets its name from George Anson.
Today the district retains the old look and feel of Charleston from long ago, but is a short walk from the hustle and bustle of a large 21st-century city. Types of homes for sale in Ansonborough include condominiums, quaint town and carriage houses, as well as larger single and double houses boasting Greek Revival and Georgian styles.
Ansonborough homes are in a great location, with the Cooper River to the east and the Charleston harbor to the south. It's a short walk to Waterfront Park, a 12-acre site with fantastic views of the harbor. Two large fountains provide a great place for kids to splash and cool off.
Ansonborough is also close to the College of Charleston and the American College of Building Arts, making it great place for a professional educator to call home. Other nearby neighborhoods includes the French Quarter to the south, Wraggborough to the north, Downtown to the west and Harleston Village to the far west.
It's just a five-minute walk from the famous Historic Charleston City market. The market is open 364 days a year and features four blocks of open-air buildings with vendors selling high-quality goods including paintings, pottery, and Charleston's famous sweet grass baskets. The market was established in the 1790's and is designated a Historic National Landmark.
