Founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, Spoletto Festival USA is the American counterpart to the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, also founded by Menotti in 1958. Menotti went searching for a historic city with a lot of theaters, churches, and other performance areas when he landed on Charleston, SC.
It is said that Spoleto created a cultural change for the city and is responsible for how popular of a tourist destination it is today. Starting the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, May 26th through June 11th, Spoleto fills Charleston for 17 days and nights with renowned artists and new performers in multiple genres including opera, theater, dance, plus a wide variety of music- symphonic and chamber to choral, jazz and folk. The festival chorus is joined by members of the festival orchestra to create a program of two iconic Baroque masterpieces by George Fredic Handel and Henry Purcell.
