Founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, Spoletto Festival USA is the American counterpart to the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, also founded by Menotti in 1958. Menotti went searching for a historic city with a lot of theaters, churches, and other performance areas when he landed on Charleston, SC.
It is said that Spoleto created a cultural change for the city and is responsible for how popular of a tourist destination it is today. Starting the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, May 26th through June 11th, Spoleto fills Charleston for 17 days and nights with renowned artists and new performers in multiple genres including opera, theater, dance, plus a wide variety of music- symphonic and chamber to choral, jazz and folk. Samuel Barber’s Pulitzer prize-winning opera explores the depths of its characters in a modern and existential drama.
This US premiered work is based on collected letters from survivors of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. Including rhythms of Rwanda’s first ever female drumming ensemble.
Spoleto returners bring new work of buoyant and virtuosic tap dance.
Zeroing in on the female perspective, choreographer Helen Pickett sets Arthur Miller’s seminal play into motion as the people of Salem go into mass hysteria.
Presented by, Australian physical theater company. This new work of theirs shows a high flying display of acrobatics that is described as its “boldest and most ambitious yet.”
The Spoleto Festival Orchestra presents Le sacre du printemps conducted by John Kennedy. Also including the US premiere of Phillip Glass’s Symphony No 14.
Many of the world’s chamber music luminaries perform eleven riveting programs highlighting a broad range of repertoire.
The festival chorus is joined by members of the festival orchestra to create a program of two iconic Baroque masterpieces by George Fredic Handel and Henry Purcell.
Grammy-nominated band closes the festival season with celebratory fireworks and sound blending funk, rock, jazz, soul, and hip-hop.
