Harleston Village is one of Charleston’s oldest and most prestigious neighborhoods on the peninsula. The area is within walking distance of some of Charleston’s major attractions, including historic King Street, the Children’s Museum and Charleston’s Farmers Market.
Its history dates back to the late 1600s, when the land was granted to John Coming and Henry Hughes. Coming’s nephew, Henry Harleston, inherited the land. Once the section of town was developed c. 1770, the area officially became known as Harleston Village. The Harleston’s were well known in the area, mostly for their activity in the province government and also because they were successful racehorse breeders.
The streets of Harleston Village are almost all named after prominent men of the late 18th century who were active in the Provincial government as well as leaders in the American Revolution. Some of these well known streets are Gadsden, Bull, Montagu and Pitt.
Harleston Village is one of the most diverse and lively neighborhoods downtown, with an endless amount of activities to explore. From anywhere in the community, it is a short walk to both King Street and the City Marina, there is easy access to a variety of corner stores and boutique shopping, and scenic Colonial Lake and Park is the neighborhood center point.
Homes in the Harleston Village area average in range from $500,000 to $3,500,000. Real estate in this neighborhood is highly sought after, attracting both Charleston locals as well as transplants.
