With their opulence and beauty, these houses allure people from across the globe.

Charleston’s historic homes boast a myriad of features that add to their allure, such as charming window boxes, haint blue porch ceilings, hinged wood shutters, enchanting lush gardens, and elegant carriage houses, not to mention the iconic single houses. These elements combine to create a captivating tapestry of historical charm.

When considering the purchase of a home in Charleston, it becomes essential to delve into the property’s history beforehand. Owning a home in such a storied city often leads to delightful surprises as you uncover the fascinating past within the walls of your residence.

Sword Gate House

The Sword Gate House, a historic home in Charleston, was constructed approximately in 1803. Situated at 32 Legare Street, it stands as a timeless symbol of the city’s architectural heritage.

Since its construction, the Sword Gate House has undergone numerous transformations and served diverse purposes. In the early 19th century, it was constructed by two merchants, earning it the name “The Sword Gate House” due to its notable design.

In 1819, the property was purchased by Andrew Talavande, who converted it into a prestigious girls’ school. The school thrived for approximately three decades and underwent several improvements during this period.

In the year 1930, the house changed hands once again, finding itself in possession of Mrs. Jessie Lincoln Randolph, the granddaughter of President Abraham Lincoln. The property was transformed into an inn, welcoming guests for many years. In 2020, Handsome Properties listed and successfully sold the historic home.

Throughout its colorful history, the Sword Gate House has retained its unique and elaborate gates adorned with swords and spears, serving as a tangible reminder of its fascinating past.

Governor’s Mansion

Handsome Properties recently had the honor to list and successfully sold the renowned Governor’s House located at 117 Broad St. in Charleston, SC. This historic residence holds a remarkable connection to the past, having been the home of Edward Rutledge, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, from 1763 until his passing in 1800.

Originally constructed in 1760 by James Lauren, the Governor’s House stands as a living testament to Charleston’s rich history. Throughout its well-preserved interior, visitors can admire original details, such as the charming pine floors, six wood-burning fireplaces, generously proportioned nine-foot windows, and soaring 12-foot ceilings, all adding to its allure. The mansion also features canopied beds and other captivating elements that offer a glimpse into the splendor of yesteryears.

In recognition of its historical significance, the house was declared a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior in 1972. Today, this extraordinary mansion has been transformed into an 11-room historic inn, offering guests luxury accommodations and classic living rooms, all while preserving the essence of its beautiful history. The Governor’s House stands as a truly unique and remarkable embodiment of Charleston’s captivating past.

Qualities of Historic Homes:

In the historically rich city of Charleston, a delightful array of architectural styles graces the streets, showcasing the city’s diverse heritage. Among the eight distinct styles are Georgian, Federal, Classical Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Victorian, and Art Deco homes, each reflecting a different era in history.

Two iconic floor plans are prominent in Charleston: the Charleston single house and the Charleston double house.
