Handsome Properties September 22, 2015
The George Robertson House, built circa 1846, is located in the heart of one of the most desirable residential neighborhoods in downtown Charleston; South of Broad. Standing command over White Point Gardens and the Charleston Harbor, this home is considered an anchor of the South of Broad fabric. After much anticipation, we are excited to report that it has been sold to a buyer with a fantastic vision that includes preserving its historical significance.
By historic preservation standards, 1 Meeting Street is considered a Category 1 property, meaning it is an “exceptional building” of pre-eminent national or state importance. These properties have had either no exterior modifications or such minor ones that the overall appearance of the building is in its original character.
In an effort to preserve its original look as much as possible, the new owners will not be able to modify the exterior, except for proper restoration as monitored by Charleston’s Preservation Society and the Board of Architectural Review (BAR). The interior, however, will receive a complete renovation.
After a lengthy debate between the BAR and the neighborhood association, the Board has agreed to allow the new owners to divide the property into three luxury condominiums. This solution allows the exterior of the home to remain unchanged, while applying the highest and best use for the home in today’s modern society.
Here are some of the original photos taken of the house pre-construction. We can’t wait to see what the finished product will look like!
