Located just 25 minutes from downtown Charleston, Magnolia Plantation dates back to 1676, making it the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry and the oldest public garden in the United States. Azaleas and camellias are two of the most popular and historic flowers in our region, and both are among the most gorgeous garden collections at Magnolia. You’ll notice many wrought iron gates and fences as you walk through downtown Charleston. Ten of these wrought iron gates link the Gateway Walk from St. John’s Lutheran Church on Archdale Street to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church.
The Gateway Walk is open to the public, but you’ll feel as if you’re exploring a secret garden when you walk it. Created and maintained by the Garden Club of Charleston, the Gateway Walk connects some of Charleston’s most historic sites, including the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Unitarian Church, and the Circular Congregational Church.
