Handsome Properties September 28, 2014
Constructed c. 1840, 43 Society Street was part of a complex of homes built by Robert Murrell Venning in the subdivision known as Ansonborough in Charleston, SC. These buildings were constructed on land that had been destroyed by the Fire of 1838 which was said to have leveled approximately one fourth of the Charleston peninsula. Only four of Venning’s homes remain standing today: 43 and 46 Society and 58 and 60 Anson Street.
It is rumored that 43 Society had been constructed for one of Venning’s sons as a wedding gift to him and his wife. The home remained in the Venning family until 1863.
43 Society is listed at $2,349,000 and is 5284 square feet. This turn-key modern-meets-classic home boasts many original details, including gleaming pine floors, beautiful moldings, wainscoting, doors, staircase and eight fireplaces. Enjoy the view of the modern backyard space from either of the two piazzas.
